ABOUT BARISTAT

Better coffee, one change at a time.

Baristat is an app that guides your brew, keeps a record of every cup and suggests one controlled change at a time for the next one. Here is, in plain text, how it works and what to expect.

What it is

An app for brewing better coffee at home, from your first pour-over to espresso. It brings together three things: a guide (recipes with dose, water, temperature, timed steps and a timer), a memory (your coffees, stock, brews and ratings, on your device) and a coach (the Brew Engine, which suggests the next adjustment).

How the Brew Engine decides

It is a set of deterministic rules that runs on your device, without internet and without relying on AI. It reads your rating (score and perceptions such as sour, bitter or watery), considers only what your equipment lets you change and picks at most one variable: grind, temperature or ratio. With a 5-star rating or not enough signal, the answer is to repeat as is: Baristat does not invent a flaw to keep you engaged. The experiments follow public industry references, such as those from the SCA and Barista Hustle, and are presented as experiments, not diagnoses.

What about Bari?

Bari is Baristat’s barista cat: a chat assistant, powered by AI, for questions about coffee, methods and recipes. It needs internet, asks for your permission before the first message and never decides the Brew Engine adjustment.

Where the recipes come from

There are 42 recipes across 9 methods, each with its source credited: manufacturers such as Hario, Melitta, Bialetti and AeroPress, baristas such as James Hoffmann and references such as the SCA. Instructions are organized into timed steps, but the credit stays visible on the recipe page, along with the author and license of each photo.

Principles

One change at a time, so you know what worked. Humility: repeating is a valid answer. Genuinely free to start, with no sign-up. Privacy: your data stays on your device, with no cloud sync; sharing usage data is optional, starts on for new installs, and you can turn it off whenever you like.
