BREWING GUIDES

Bitter coffee: where to start

If coffee is too bitter for you, check the recipe and what changed since your last brew. Roast, concentration and extraction can affect perception. Choose a test your equipment allows.

Try changing first

Choose one experiment your equipment allows. Compare using the same coffee and recipe. This list is neither a diagnosis nor a sequence of changes to make all at once.

  1. Change 1 of 3

    Check the brew

Compare measured quantities and the sequence with the recipe. Correct an execution difference before adjusting the recipe.

  2. Change 2 of 3

    Try a coarser grind

With an adjustable grinder, test a small change while keeping coffee, water and temperature steady. Clicks are not comparable across grinders.

  3. Change 3 of 3

    Try a lower temperature

If you can control temperature, test within the recipe’s range while holding other variables steady. Taste before deciding.

Brew the next cup with what worked in this one.
